Horizon Astro-Works

Thank you for visiting !  I am James Wallach, a full time resident living the astronomers dream under amazing skies !  In fact, I moved here from the Denver Metro primarily because of the world class night skies and to pursue my astrophotography on a full-time basis from my home observatory next to the dunes.

With over 20 years experience in visual astronomy, school and public outreach, telescope building and restoration, I felt something was lacking in the valley - public access to telescopes you can use on your own time, be it at a campsite, Air BNB, or just a nightly excursion.

Horizon Astro-Works was born from a passion: making the infinite beauty of the cosmos accessible to everyone. My journey began under the dark skies of the Midwest as a child peering through my first telescope hoping to discover new worlds,  and now to the Great Sand Dunes where the universe feels close enough to touch. I realized that while many dream of exploring the stars, the barrier of complex equipment or cost often keeps those dreams grounded.

With the Dunes seeing well over 400,000 visitors a year, this is an opportunity for people from all over this planet to take home a truly unique experience. Many who are unable to bring their own telescopes now have the means to photograph or observe under the skies they dream of !
